- Campaign to purchase The Centurion in Vicars Cross
Monday 12 February 2024
As many members will know, the community in Vicars Cross have been trying to purchase the "Cenny" as a community asset pub from Admiral Taverns. They have made significant progress in obtaining a Government grant and a commercial mortgage. However, they are now trying to raise the remainder of the funds from the community or investors.
The Mayor of Chester will be calling in at 15.30 on 15th February 2024 to raise the profile of the cause together with the secretary of the Chester CAMRA branch and representatives of the media.
Dave Leonard one of the Committee members at the Centurion in Vicars Cross has said "It would greatly increase our chance of success if as many CAMRA members as possible could call in and promote our cause."
They currently have three ales on tap with two rotating and Cheshire Cat as a regular.
More information about the campaign and how you can get involved and/or contribute funds for the purchase can be found in the following links:

- Changes to Chester and South Clwyd CAMRA Branch
Friday 27 October 2023
The C&SC CAMRA branch currently has 741 members, with approximately 400 living in the South Clwyd area.
As part of the recent Regions Review across CAMRA, it’s been agreed that the branch be split to create a new sub-branch (Dee Valley) for those living in Wales. All members affected will be moved to Dee Valley sub- branch by mid-November. The main branch, Chester will be renamed to reflect this change.
This will not affect membership benefits or status and members do not need to do anything unless South Clwyd members wish to keep Chester as your primary branch.
Once the change has been made, Dee Valley sub-branch will appear on membership records of South Clwyd members at that time. Any new/renewed membership cards currently being issued may still have Chester and South Clwyd on them in the short term.
Anyone that wishes to remain in what will become the renamed Chester Branch can do so. You will need to contact ku.gro.armac@pihsrebmem and request that your branch is locked to Chester. This will mean that when those members living in the South Clwyd area are moved in mid-November, you will remain in the Chester branch.
A meeting for the new Dee Valley sub-branch members has been arranged by the new sub-branch Chair, Alan Roberts, so they can start forming a new committee and planning campaigning and other activities. The meeting will take place on 22nd November at 7.30pm at the King William Inn, Top Road, Summerhill, Wrexham LL11 4TA.
All members are welcome to attend, especially those living in the new Dee Valley sub-branch area.
In the meantime, if you have any queries regarding this change, please contact the Merseyside and Cheshire regional director at: ku.gro.armac@erihsehcedisyesrem.dr
With best wishes. Nick Bosley Regional Director

- CaSC Branch Social to Halifax
Thursday 4 May 2023
After a false start when the Secretary got on the wrong train and then the train broke down at Manchester Victoria, a group of branch members enjoyed a great day out on Thursday 4th May sampling the superb pubs and bars that Halifax has to offer. At times it must have felt like herding cats but our guide Craig Papworth managed to successfully shepherd the group round the route that started in
Seven Brothers at Square Chapel Café & Bar,
and then after a detour to take in the amazing Piece Hall,
included
The Meandering Bear
,
Kobenhavn
,
Vocation & Co
,
Victorian Craft Beer
,
Dukes
,
The Grayston Unity
,
The Royal Oak
.
and
The Three Pigeons
The weather stayed good, if cool, until the dash back to the station to catch the last direct train home when the heavens opened. Fortunately there was no drama on the return journey.
The consensus on the train back was that Victorian Craft was the best pub of the trip however there was no clear favourite for best beer!

- Plumbers Arms closes for good
Friday 30 October 2020
Sad to report that the Plumbers Arms in Chester will no longer continue as a pub. It has been sold to the neighbouring Apart-hotel development and will become its restaurant.
Another pub bites the dust.
- Cask Offer at Crown and Liver
Wednesday 14 October 2020
The Crown and Liver in Ewloe has a new manager and is keen to push sales of their cask beer offerings. Each Wednesday now sees all cask ales at £2.50 per pint, an offer certainly worth supporting!
- Hare at Farndon opens
Tuesday 13 October 2020
Great news that the Hare at Farndon has now opened for business. Formerly the Greyhound, the pub has undergone a transformation under the new ownership of Jerry Brunning (of B&P fame). Jonney Cox is the man in charge who many will remember from the Bull at Shocklash and then the Yew Tree over in Spurstow.
We wish them every sucess!
- Pub visits under new regulations
Friday 9 October 2020
Report on a small pub crawl after the implementation of 10pm closing and mask-wearing regulations,
The first pub visited was the Architect, a Brunning and Price pub, a superb listed building and former home of the renowned architect Thomas Harrison (1774 -1829). His works in Chester included the rebuilding of Chester Castle (1785 1822) and designs for the Grosvenor Bridge, completed after his death in 1829. The balcony from his upstairs bedroom overlooks both structures. The interior is now decorated with excellent replicas of pictures from the nearby Grosvenor Museum art collection. We arrived outside the entrance door and donned our face masks. We were greeted just inside the door; the contact details were collected for one of us and we were asked to sanitise our hands. We were then shown to our table and went close enough to the bar to see the real ales that were on offer. Had we failed to remember them all, we could see them listed on chalkboards. Our beer order was taken at our table and delivered. Beers were, Phoenix Brunning and Price bitter, Weetwood Eastgate, Tatton Blonde, Beatnix Republic 2 AM Poet, Brimstage Trappers Hat, Roosters American Hopped IPA, and Sherwood Reserve Stout.
Our second call was the Big Hand Alehouse, another pub with Thomas Harrison connections. It is set in the cellar of Watergate House, built in 1820 by Harrison for the Clerk to the Peace of Cheshire, Henry Potts. Once again, masks were obligatory, details given and suitably sanitised we were shown to our table. We were impressed by the amount of work undertaken to separate tables and create a series of booths divided by screens. Big Hand Super Tidy, Seren and Apaloosa were on offer and all in very good condition. Food is now served Wednesday to Sunday, 5.00 – 9.00.
Our final pub was the Goat and Munch in Garden Lane. No grand architecture here, but the former fridge repair shop has become a real ale mecca and community micro-pub. Despite its size, social distancing and the wearing of masks are rigorously enforced and hand sanitisers are on every table. Red Willow Wreckless, and Kirkstall Jasper were on offer. The Jasper was cloudy, but intended to be so and clearly labelled by the brewery on the pump clip. The third beer had just run out and was replaced by a Salopian Torque. Again, all the real ales were in very good condition.
- PINTS AND SOCIAL BUBBLES PART 3
Tuesday 6 October 2020
It’s nearly a month since our last outing so time for another update on the new normal pub scene in Chester as part of CAMRA’s Cask Ale Week from 24 September to 4 October.
We started along Bridge Street Row where the quirky Cavern of the Curious Gnome is located above Paysan (peasant in French) wine bar at row level. Ascend the stairs and a colourful large papier-mâché dwarf gazes down on a Belgium beer grotto. Red-and-white spotted toadstool seating immediately catches the eye as well as school style bench seating now separated by plastic screening. Having only just reopened, staff were still assessing the impact of the about to be imposed regulations and the 10pm curfew closing time.
Despite this, they were upbeat and allowed us to view the beers on offer before taking our orders. Squawk Pavo Pale Ale and Northern Monk Essential Session IPA were on offer together with two Ciders. Having two rounds at this pub enabled us to try each of the beers and my favourite was the distinctive hoppy Pavo from Squawk Brewing Company though I didn’t quite get their description of blossom and bubblegum on the nose. Another two great beers from the many microbreweries in Manchester that I’m gradually ticking off.
A quick turn left down to Lower Bridge Street brings you to the Cross Keys. Rebuilt in 1894 this Ruabon red bricked Grade II listed building was bought by Joules brewery in 2012 and has been tastefully refurbished by them. It’s also a regular venue for our branch meetings that are held in their upstairs room the “Slaughtered Lamb”. However, it was a different view we enjoyed on the night as were seated in their spacious downstairs room with oak floors and wood panelling throughout. Notable features are the etched mirrors and stained glass windows depicting other hostelries in the Joules estate. If you didn’t know it you’d think you were looking at a genuine Victorian interior. It brought back memories of my leaving do on a Friday in February 1989 when I said farewell to my colleagues from Cheshire CC enjoying a pint of Boddingtons Beer which owned the pub at that time. Different beers now, with Joules Pale and Blonde Ales, Slumbering Monk available together with two Rosies Ciders. All beers were very good.
Just across the road is another Grade II* listed building at the Brewery Tap. You go up the steps and through the doors into a stunning former Jacobean banqueting hall. Charles I stayed here in 1645 and behind a Perspex panel part of the original wattle and daub wall can still be seen. The pub's stone floors and high ceilings offer a safe drinking environment in these Covid times. Siren beers were on offer with Breakfast Stout, Lumina and Yulu together with Goffs Jester and Lancer and Celtic Marches Thundering Molly cider. All beers very good.
Three great pubs with great beers and cider choices as well which made another enjoyable evening had by all.
However, now pubs are on reduced hours and local lockdowns not too far away it’s another blow for them having suffered 3 month closure and then been getting to grips with table service and reduced pub visitors. It’s now even more important we support our pubs but in a responsible manner so as not to allow further draconian measures to be introduced.
- Parkgate and Neston visit
Wednesday 30 September 2020
The mid-September sun tempted me onto a bus for the first time in six months. The 22 route between Chester and West Kirby is frustrating, finishing early in the evening and not running at all on Sundays, but it is nevertheless really useful in providing access to a number of interesting pubs on the western side of Wirral.
Alighting at the northern end of Parkgate prom, I called first at The Boathouse, where entry was straightforward, with a polite welcome and a well-marked one-way system. Of the three Hydes beers on the pumps, I decided the Portuguese Bock at 5% was too strong as a thirst-quencher, so opted for the reliable Original, which unfortunately ran out at the first pull. The barman’s response was a shrug, with no suggestion that the barrel would be changed, so I switched to a Lowry, which I enjoyed on the open terrace with a mix of family diners and a few examples of that endangered species, the office lunch-time drinker.
I remember The Red Lion with affection from its Warrington Walker’s days. It still feels the most ‘pub-like’ of the four outlets on the front but, unfortunately, these days the beer range is uninspiring, with just Ruddles County and Greene King IPA on offer, though Tetley’s may also be available. I went for the GK IPA and while many think it on the bland side, its condition here couldn’t be faulted. Contact details were taken while the beer was settling but this was the only pub I’ve visited since re-opening where cash payment has been refused. On a positive note, I would never have imagined that I could sit sipping a pint at the window of a Wirral pub watching a Great White Egret strutting around just a couple of hundred metres away.
It was then a short walk to The Ship, where the queue to register and be served reflected its popularity. Not having had the chance to drink Brimstage Trapper’s Hat for so long, I had no hesitation in ordering it ahead of Brains Reverend James and Cwrw Ial Pocket Rocket. I was lucky enough to snatch the last spot in the sun and the Trapper’s went down very easily, though these days I think it has slipped slightly from its earlier excellence.
I’ve never known what to expect from The Old Quay. I’m sure that in my youth I must have drunk some passable beers there, but given that nowadays it’s primarily an eating-house and that recent pub descriptions mention Sharp’s Doom Bar, one of the few real ales I actively avoid, I signed in with some trepidation. The stirring of hope as I spotted what seemed to be 3 hand-pulls with different badges dissipated on the realisation they were just variants on the Doom Bar theme. Fast exit. Deciding to keep The Harp for another day, I headed up the road to Neston town centre. It was several years since I’d drunk here and I remembered The Brown Horse as the best of the bunch. This time, however, it was a great disappointment, with Robinson’s Unicorn the only badge on the three pumps. The welcome and service were friendly enough but, sadly, the beer was vinegar and was exchanged for a Guinness without hesitation.
On boarding the last bus home I reflected on a mixed day. All the pubs had applied the current safety measures appropriately and politely and it seems churlish to comment too negatively on beer range and quality at a time when we’re fortunate to have pubs open at all and when owners, licensees and staff are faced with so many conflicting pressures. S.W.A.
- Pints and Social Bubbles Part 2
Wednesday 2 September 2020
Our second excursion starts in Northgate Street at the Pied Bull. An oak-beamed city centre pub which is the oldest continuously licensed premises in Chester, also reputed to be haunted. A high tech welcome at the desk is where you scan the QR code for track and trace by using the camera of your mobile phone. Unfortunately mine didn’t work so plan B was the analogue version of a paper form.
A quick look at the beer choice before being seated revealed three of their own beers Adorabull, Sensibull, Taurus and a Broad Oak cider. The Pied Bull is the only microbrewery within the city walls with the brewery located underneath the bar in the cellar. The pub also has accommodation and there were a number of guests checking in and also enjoying late lunches. Indeed our table was reserved for an evening booking later so we assumed on our leaving that a spray and clean would be done, though nothing personal of course.
Next in Northgate Street would have been the Bull & Stirrup but as there was quite a queue outside we decided to have a walk to Brook Street and visit the Olde Cottage. This welcoming traditional community hostelry benefits from a range of pub games with two dart boards, pool and bagatelle though all games off at the moment. With a reduced number of tables and contact details collected we were directed to a table. It was good timing as well as the pub has introduced a special offer of all real ales at £2.50 a pint Sunday to Thursday and £3.00 a pint on Friday and Saturdays. With Butcombe Original, Weetwood Oregan Pale, and Merlin the Wizard proved exceptional good value for each round. No sign of the cat though there was a message on the bar saying “How do you know the cat’s on a diet?” Sat in a corner with light streaming through the window it was a chance for us to admire the engraving of the words Olde Cottage Inn Real Ales on the smoked glass. A quick walk further along Brook Street towards the railway station brings you to the Deva Tap. A one way system was in operation and we entered by a side entrance which we’d not used before.
The interior is fairly open plan but still has the feel of three separate rooms - a small area by the front door, larger seating area in the middle and the bar at the far end. The small courtyard outside with picnic tables was busy. A quick look at the bar revealed three beers instead of the usual five available, which were their regular Rat White Rat, Thornbridge Jaipur and Dark Arts from Magic Rock. No prizes for guessing my choice, the Jaipur, but the other two were on top form as well. To finish off the evening handmade pizzas were ordered and were good value.
Three great pubs to visit and all beers were in good form despite a reduced range though as they say less is more.
Another enjoyable evening had by all.
- Pints and Social Bubbles Part 1
Friday 28 August 2020
It’s post lockdown and I'd sampled my first pint of Weetwood Cheshire Cat in a pub for nearly four months at the Royal Oak in Kelsall after a delightful six mile circular walk, This prompted a social bubble experiment with a few CAMRA colleagues to keep to social distancing and see how some of the pubs in Chester were managing.
Late afternoon and it’s still pleasantly warm along City Road for the starting point at the Cornerhouse. The first thing you realise is having to wait at the door to be seated as there is no vertical drinking at the bar anymore. At the Cornerhouse, a mock Tudor building featuring lots of bare brick walls and wood flooring, we were welcomed with sanitised seats and tables, contact details were taken and then we were told of the beers available; Salopian Oracle, Mobberley 1924 and Arbor My Little Sabrony. I chose the latter American Pale Ale as I’d not heard of it and looking up the brewery based in Bristol, the beer names are somewhat bizarre – I Speak for the Trees, Blue Sky Drinking and Why Kick a Moo Cow!! . Contactless payment was the order of the day.
Moving across the road to their sister establishment the Cellar, we were welcomed by mine host Aki who found us some suitable seating from the quirky non matching choice available. Although space was reduced affecting numbers to be accommodated it didn’t affect the beer choice though I do know some pubs have reduced their range. There was a great beer from Chapter Brewing called Puck at the Helm and I quote from them “A new golden ale, available in Cask Only as a celebration for all our lovely pubs and bars that are beginning to open their doors. Dry hopped with Simcoe and Citra, Puck At The Helm is bright and bold!” and so it was. We also tried Brewsmith Comet Session IPA. Sadly the regular Marble Pint was not available much to the dismay of our chairman. It was also great to hear that the Cellar has got back to a measure of normality with their Beer Without Fear (BWF) monthly tastings on Mondays. We had some fun paying again on contactless with Aki’s machine confirming a payment of £143,000!!. That’s tech for you.
A quick cross over the road and down the steps to the canal brings you to the Old Harkers Arms, part of the Brunning and Price group. This upmarket pub was converted from the ground floor of a former Victorian canalside warehouse. Timber flooring, traditional wooden furniture and cast iron pillars provide an insight to its former use. We were met at the door by friendly staff wearing plastic face shields and were led to a table. Blackboards list the real ales with tasting notes, usually nine are available with a reduced selection to five we couldn’t grumble. Two Weetwoods (Eastgate and Cheshire Cat), Ludlow Blonde, Timothy Taylor Boltmaker and Big Hand Bastion.
A quick right turn down the canal towpath brings you to the Artichoke, a popular bar on the ground floor of the Steam Mill. Four handpumps usually dispense beers from micros in and around Cheshire, Shropshire, Manchester and North Wales. True to form they had on Beatnikz Republic, 2 am Poet. Plus Tatton Best, and Red Willow, Weightless all in top form.
So there you have it, a small insight to see how pubs are coping post lockdown. Although the beer range may be less than normal due to reduced numbers, the quality remains good. The pubs are trying hard to keep customers safe and following Government Guidelines with sanitisers at the ready. OUR ADVICE: Read any rules outside the pub before entering / follow instructions / expect to be seated, not standing at the bar / Enjoy your socially distanced beer. Your pub needs you! Look out for part 2 coming soon.
- Post-lockdown in the Albion
Thursday 27 August 2020
What is visiting a pub like post-lockdown? Are you wary of visiting pubs? This is a note on a recent visit to the Albion in Chester.
The Albion, in Park Street, Chester is an iconic, Victorian corner pub with a World War 1 theme. It has always sold Real Ale and in the distant past used to belong to and sell Greenall Whitley.
It was not one of the first pubs to reopen and was possibly, quietly, “getting things right”. This has been achieved. Tables for eating and drinking are all separated by Perspex screens, so a light and airy atmosphere is retained. You can see the rest of the bar but feel safe in your own “bubble”. Distances are properly marked out, the staff all wear face shields and hand sanitizers are strategically placed.
On a very recent visit, Well’s, Bombardier and St Austell, Tribute were on hand pump and both in very good condition. The home- made food was excellent, as usual and reasonably priced. A good selection of vegetarian food is offered. The landlord, Mike, is firmly of the opinion that beer suffers from the atmosphere caused by frying chips, so they are not on offer here. One speciality is Staffordshire Oatcakes, brought, personally from a family producer in that area.
The Albion is well worth a visit.
- Branch Meetings & Socials
Wednesday 18 March 2020
Due to recent Government advice and given the age demographic of many of our members, we have sadly cancelled all upcoming branch meetings and socials. We would hate to put anybody at extra risk in these difficult times.
We appreciate that with the Government not actually closing pubs that many members will naturally wish to continue supporting the pub and brewing industry. We would just ask everyone to stay safe, be sensible and take all reasonable hygiene precautions.
- Brewers Arms closes
Wednesday 15 January 2020

- Presentation to Halfway House
Wednesday 31 July 2019
At the July branch meeting of Chester & S.Clwyd branch held at the Halfway House, Childer Thornton, licensees Chris & Jane were presented with a Highly Commended certificate for coming a very close second place in the 2019 CAMRA Pub Of The Year competition for the Chester area. Chairman Brian Vardy said it was a very close run competition with the winner, The Olde Cottage in Chester only ahead by the smallest of margins. As a reward for being so close he was delighted to present the certificate to Chris & Jane as recognition for their hard work in promoting real ale served in a real pub! Both were very pleased, and surprised to receive the award and they are well supported in their quest by a loyal following of locals who certainly filled the pub on this night. Well done Chris & Jane!

- Calder Valley pubs by train
Tuesday 30 July 2019
On a sunny Saturday (June 22) 15 people turned up at Chester station to board the 1023 train to Halifax. This was a new service from Northern Trains which formed a direct service from Chester to Leeds via Manchester Victoria. We arrived at Halifax just after midday and headed to the café/bar in the Square Unity, originally a square chapel but now restored as an arts and performance venue next to the Piece Hall building. Four beers on handpumps were available and I tried Stod Fold Chord, a light blonde ale which was refreshing after a 2 hour journey. On the way out we walked across a delightful, colonnaded square which has featured on several TV programmes e.g. Antiques Roadshow, and made tracks to a micropub called The Grayston Unity. 5 beers were on offer here and I had Kirkstall Black Band porter which was very good, I think most other people had the lighter beers and we found some outside space to sit out and enjoy the sunshine. Next stop was Victorian Craft Beer Café which spoiled us with a choice of 10 beers including 2 dark and 2 ciders. So I had Moor stout and North Riding Toffee porter, both very good with the latter just ahead on beer scores for me. A quick stop at another micropub called Alexanders for Beartown Atlas then on to the Royal Oak which 9 beers on – 4 of them dark beers, I must have landed in heaven! In fact this pub wasn’t on our original itinerary but was recommended by a small breakaway group who couldn’t fit into the micropubs with the main group but it was a brilliant tip and the pub offers 10% CAMRA discount. Eagle of Darkness, a 5% porter by Eagles Crag brewery was my beer of choice, in very good condition with smooth taste. Now we moved on to our last pub in Halifax; the famous Three Pigeons, an excellent 1930s Art Deco style pub with 5 separate rooms radiating off an octagonal entrance lobby. It is owned by Ossett Brewery so 5 of their beers were available plus 4 guests. The Ossett Yorkshire Brunette was very good as was Ikley Black IPA, not as hoppy as I has expected.
Back to the station for the train to Hebden Bridge, a charming small town with a well kept old-fashioned station. First stop was Calan’s micropub but it was packed out so some of us moved on to the White Lion for a quick half of Timothy Taylors Boltmaker, then moving on to the Old Gate, a modern style pub with impressive copper bar top, 9 beers on offer and tempting food menu! A very good pint of Thornbridge Black Harry helped wash down excellent fish & chips
There are many more good pubs to try in Hebden Bridge but sadly it was time for the train to Todmorden where we only had time to visit Nightjar, a new micropub with a small front room bar but also upstairs seating. 6 beers were on and I had Born Slippy banana Stout, an excellent beer. Time for the last train journey of the day catching the 1939 to Chester after a great day out.
Photo shows most of the group outside Halifax Town Hall.

- Braanch Pub of the Year 2018 (South Clwyd area)
Friday 16 March 2018
We are delighted to announce that the Bridge End Inn, Ruabon, has been judged our Branch Pub of the Year 2018 (South Clwyd Area).
The Bridge came out on top against another high quality list of finalists which also comprised the Aqueduct in Froncsyllte, the Colliers Arms in Ponciau and the Ponsonby Arms in Llangollen. Four judges were appointed by the branch and the panel made several independent visits to each pub before scoring them in accordance with the CAMRA National Judging Criteria. The individual scores were then collated and totalled, revealing the Bridge End to be the winner.
All four pubs were found to be of a very high standard, particularly in regards to the real ale served. Other criterion includes style and décor, service and welcome, community focus and alignment with CAMRA principals.
The Bridge End surely needs little introduction, being a multi-winning branch Pub of the Year, a regional winner and even taking the top accolade of CAMRA National Pub of the Year in 2011. The judges loved the friendly welcoming atmosphere plus the excellent quality and range of the real ales. All this and the on-site brewery isn’t currently in operation!
Our Branch Pub of The Year will now enter the CAMRA Champion Pub of North Wales competition. Congratulations to the McGivern family and staff at the Bridge End Inn!

- Pub of the Year winner 2018 (Cheshire area)
Friday 16 March 2018
We are delighted to announce that the Olde Cottage in Brook Street, Chester, has been judged our Branch Pub of the Year 2018 (Cheshire Area).
We had four finalists for the award this year, in addition to the Cottage were other excellent Chester pubs the Cellar, the Cross Keys and the Deva Tap. Seven judges were appointed and they had the pleasant task of making several independent visits to each pub before scoring them in accordance with the CAMRA National Judging Criteria. The individual scores were then collated and totalled, revealing the Cottage to be the winner.
All four pubs were found to be of a very high standard, particularly in regards to the real ale served. Other criterion includes style and décor, service and welcome, community focus and alignment with CAMRA principals.
The judges commented that The Olde Cottage was an excellent inclusive community pub, raising large amounts of money for local charities. Beer quality was excellent and the staff and regulars were very welcoming. A real fire added to the character and atmosphere. There was an emphasis on pub games, with bagatelle, a game unique to Chester, played and promoted.
Our Branch Pub of The Year will now enter the CAMRA Champion Pub of Cheshire competition, an award in which it was previously successful in 2016.
Congratulations to Trevor and the whole team at the Olde Cottage!
